ADSL FAQ'S

What hardware do I need to use ADSL?
You need an ADSL modem/router and a filter for your phone line. You can buy the hardware from most computer hardware shops or we can purchase it for you (allow about $100)
.

Can I be on the Internet and use the phone at the same time?
You certainly can. ADSL uses a high frequency signal to communicate, high enough that it can be easily differentiated from a normal conversation. Once you attach the filter to your phone it blocks out the high frequency (ADSL) signals so you can talk to your mate no worries while the internet is connected.

My downloads are not as quick as my neighbours, who also has ADSL?
Most of our plans have a speed cap on them which varies depending on the plan. It is likely that your neighbour has subscribed to a plan that allows greater download speeds to be achieved.

Dial up FAQ'S
Can I be on the Internet and use the phone at the same time?
No you cannot. Dialup modems and Telephones send the same type of signals through the phone line so both cannot use it at the same time as they would interfere with each others signal. This is why if you pick up the phone whilst on the internet you hear a lot of screeching, this is the modem sending and receiving data to and from the internet.

What is the deal with 4 hour session limits & 20 minute idle times?
Four hour session limits mean you will be automatically disconnected after 4 hours, and 20 minutes idle time means you will be automatically disconnected if your Internet connection remains idle (no data being transferred) for 20 minutes or more. This is to ensure everyone gets a fair go and to stop people leaving their Internet on all day, or while they are not using it.

If I get booted can I redial straight away?
Yes you can.

Can I connect any faster than 56k?
With our Dialup service you cannot get any faster than 56k, no matter how hard you try. You can however get Broadband which will allow you to get a much quicker connection. Take a look here for a comparison between dialup and broadband.

I can only connect at 28k, what gives?
Perhaps you only have a 28k modem installed in your machine (as opposed to a 56k), although the most likely explanation is that the phone lines in your area are damaged or of poor quality. This is very common in regional areas, especially older areas with older lines. This is out of our control and is something you need to take up with your telephone company.

My internet keeps dropping for no apparent reason?
Again this is usually due to poor lines in your area picking up interfering noise and causing your modem to spit the dummy and once again is out of our control. Another cause could be our automatic timeouts, see the 2nd question at the top of this page for an explanation.
Satellite FAQ'S

How Does vSat work?
vSat satellite products are a stand alone solution requiring no traditional internet connection method. A connection via a LAN port on the vSat subscribers computer is made to the Sky Edge decoder which is connected to the satellite dish. Internet requests are made by the subscriber bouncing of an orbiting satellite Bordernet's earth station hub. The hub then delivers the internet request back to the subscriber at broadband speed.

What do I need for the connection?
A LAN interface card (network port) inside your machine or a router device for networking.

What speeds should I expect with vSat?
For standard home and business connections, inbound speeds from your premises to our servers are set at either 64k or 128k. Download speeds of 256k and 512k are set back to your equipment. Speeds can be increased for larger corporate users.

What equipment do I require from Bordernet?
A 1.2 meter satellite dish, Sky Edge satellite decoder installed at your premises.

What platforms and operating systems are supported and can it be networked between 2 or more computer systems?
Sky Edge modems are simple coded IP devices meaning they will work with all platforms and operating systems that use IP protocol. This includes both IBM and Macintosh computers running Windows 98, ME, 2000 and XP, OS. A basic knowledge of IP networking is all that should be required for the setting up of vSat. White papers are available however Bordernet will not support individual networks

Is vSat available under a HiBIS subsidy arrangement?
Yes. Bordernet has successfully demonstrated that our vSat products are metro comparable in speed and cost and therefore a HiBIS government subsidy is available for this technology for people in rural and remote areas that CAN NOT GET ISDN or ADSL services.
A preliminary check to see if you can get ISDN is available by clicking HERE .

If you can receive ISDN, an iSat subsidy may be available to you. The vSat subsidy payment is used to pay for 100% of the cost of equipment, installation at your premises and a reduced rate per month to the subscriber.

What if I am ineligible under HiBIS?
If you are ineligible for a HiBIS subsidy, vSat is available on an individual basis. Equipment charges are around the cost of standard ADSL setup charges, subscription rates are quoted on an individual quotation basis.

I have a satellite dish installed on my roof. Can I use that and can I get TV and iSat internet simultaneously?
No, only satellite dishes that have previously been used for 2 way satellite services may be used. Customers wanting to use these products must first confirm with Bordernet what type of modem decoder they have.

Does Bordernet VoIS work with vSat?
Yes, vSat can be set up at the hub to negotiate VoIS calls through the Bordernet VoIS network. vSat calls have a degree of latency as they have to travel huge distances to send and return. Bordernet uses Voice packet prioritization at the hub to minimize any call latency.
